Urgent Maternal Warning Signs

Be aware of these symptoms during pregnancy and in the first year after delivery. They could save your life.

Severe Headache

A headache that won’t go away or gets worse over time. Often described as the "worst headache of your life."

Dizziness or Fainting

Feeling unsteady, lightheaded, or losing consciousness. Also includes changes in your vision (blurriness, seeing spots).

Trouble Breathing

Feeling short of breath, like you can't get enough air, even when resting.

Chest Pain or Fast Heartbeat

Pain, pressure, or tightness in your chest. A racing heart that doesn't slow down.

Heavy Bleeding

Soaking through one pad or more in an hour, or blood clots the size of an egg or bigger.

Severe Belly Pain

Pain in your abdomen that doesn't go away, especially if it's not related to cramps or contractions.

Swelling, Redness, or Pain

Severe swelling in your hands, face, or legs. Also, one leg that is more swollen, red, or painful than the other.

Fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or Higher

A high temperature, often accompanied by chills or feeling unwell.

Thoughts of Harming Yourself or Your Baby

Overwhelming feelings of sadness, anxiety, or despair that make you consider harm.
